Clients frequently show at my web design doorstep without a clear idea of where my web design services begin, and how to build an effective website, so I want to clarify what my services are, how I can help, and what you need to effectively leverage a website for your business.
What is a website?
Not literally — obviously if you live in the 21st century you know what a website is. You’re on one right now. But do you really know how a website works for a business? There is no one size fits all answer to this question, but generally speaking a website is not the first place your clients are going to hear of you. The world wide web is a very large place, and, especially if you are just getting started, it is not likely to be the place your clients first encounter you. Rather, your website is a place where you can seal the deal.
So what do I need to build an effective website?
You’ll need a few things to make sure your website is working for your business. Let’s break it down.
Intent: Every business has a purpose. What’s yours?
Ideal Client Avatar: Who do you want to work with and what problem of theirs do you solve?
Core Values and/or a Mission Statement: What makes your business tick? What do you consider the unwavering foundations that keep you and your business running no matter what? Who and what are you dedicated to serving?
Branding: Branding is a logo and your color palette and your fonts, but it’s so much more than that. Your brand encompasses the visual aspects of your business as well as your style and tone of voice. It should speak to your ideal clients while also representing your core values.
A plan of action & marketing strategy: A website is but one part of launching a business. In fact, many people launch successful businesses without websites and that’s okay too. While I don’t ask that you come to me with a full on marketing plan, you should be prepared to talk about what other resources or strategies you are leveraging to make sure your website is ending up in front of the eyes of those ideal clients we’ve been talking about.
Some combination of Effective Sales Copy & Verbal Sales Skills: Having people show up on your business does not guarantee they will buy your product or book your services. I provide a website that makes logical sense for a client to work through, read your services/pitch/offer, and see your calls to action. It’s your job to provide the copy that will drive sales on your website, and it’s your job to hop on discovery calls or answer communications to make a connection and sell your product, program or service. I make it pretty, easy to navigate and intuitive to access, but the rest is up to you!
Pro Tip: Put yourself in the shoes of your ideal client. If they are searching for your services what will they type into Google? What specific problem of theirs are you solving, and why do they view you as the best person to provide a solution?
Every business owner has to get started somewhere, but I will be honest and tell you that a website is not the place to start, and I will never sell you on something you don’t need. A website is a tool in your tool box to make your business shine, but without business intentions, effective branding and top notch sales copy, it may fall short of helping you nurture leads and close deals.
